Lessons with the Master Chefs - At this mouthwatering site, Julia visits with America's most famous chefs, who demonstrate their techniques, regional recipes, and culinary tips. I was so inspired that I went home and whipped up a great dish of sea scallops with wild mushrooms.

Zot Comics - Scott McCloud, is well known to avid comic collector's for his 1980's series, Zot! He recently revived this fabled series in a format that requires nothing more than your browser to enjoy.

Love Money Hate Planning - Can personal financial planning be fun? I don't think so, unless having a root canal is your idea of fun. IHateFinancianPlanning.com knows exactly how you feel. This fun-filled website is for everyone who loves money, hates planning, and wants answers.

Air Traffic Control Command Center - If you're taking a flight from a major US airport, this site is a great resource. It has real time information about traffic conditions and potential delays.

Lost in the Translation - Gaijin A Go Go features well know actors doing dubbed commercials in Japanese, or as they say, "selling out in Japan". Laugh along as Keanu sells liqueur, Demi sells Jog Mate Protein Goo, and Leonardo hawks a credit card.

Politics and Culture - An online magazine that covers the blending of popular and political culture through commentary, discussions and more. Great content!

If you would like some practical advice on how to cut down on the number of calls you're getting as well as techniques you can use to combat this menace, check out this site.

DNA Sciences - This site is an excellent primer on the Human Genome and features a library of articles on the part genetics play in a wide variety of diseases along with a fascinating introduction to the basics of DNA.

The Dirt Brothers - The Dirt Brothers are amateur archeologists who operate a non-profit organization which encourages its members to excavate privately owned sites in search of artifacts which might otherwise be destroyed. Their site contains thousands of artifacts along with suggestions for organizing group excavations on private sites.

Virtual Civilization - Cybertown is a futuristic community of colonies (463,000 members) where you can interact with others in virtual reality. Their multinational citizens inhabit and socialize in richly detailed 3D Blade Runner type worlds using avatars to represent themselves.

Early Audio Recordings - Whether you're a newcomer or are familiar with the old-time sounds, you'll enjoy this voyage into the wonderful recordings of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

America at Work, School and Play - These historical film collections are the key contribution of the Library of Congress to the National Digital Library. From Vaudeville shows including animal acts, burlesque, dance, comic sketches and more through Society Ballooning and Shooting the Chutes at Coney Island, this site offers up a wonderful plate of nostalgia.

Browser Panache - If you're tired of looking at the drab shades of your internet browser, check out Hotbar.com. It's a free add-on that instantaneously converts your static browser into a personalized instrument of enhanced functionality and visual appeal.

Olympic History - Next week, all eyes will be focused on Sydney, Australia and the beginning of the 2000 Olympic games. In celebration of the games, Kodak has created a beautiful site featuring an illustrated timeline beginning with the rebirth of the modern games in 1896 to the present day.

Grease Car - If you're looking for relief from the high price of gasoline, this site will enlighten and entertain. The Grease Car is a converted VW van that runs entirely on used cooking grease.

Be Vocal - BeVocal is a phone service that enables you to dial a toll-free number and say simple spoken commands to obtain useful services such as point-to-point driving directions, real-time traffic reports, flight information, stock quotes, and weather. It is a very useful service.

Emergency Email Network - Sign up for this free service and get notified of an emergency by email, from your local, regional and national government sources.

Long Strange Trip - This amazing site invites you to turn off your mind, relax and float downstream and highlights some of the mood altering experiences of the psychedelic era. If I could stop time, it would be here. Not to mention how much fun it would be, to be 25 again.

I Should Be Working - A great site for free cyberslacking fun and online loafing humor. You can play games, read jokes, enter contests, check sports scores, and enjoy a wide range of non work related fun. If your boss should come by for a visit, there's a "panic button" that will take you to a business site, to make it look like you're really doing company business.

Wanna be a rock and roll star - This service is free to the musicians. Simply put, IUMA's goal is about "...getting the music out and giving new music fans a cool way to discover music." Be sure to check out "Radio IUMA" which will introduce you to some great music, based on your favorite genre.

How the WWW works - Most of us take the workings of the WWW for granted, and are happy to know that it just works. If you'd like to have a greater understanding about web servers basics including, what http:// is, or how to choose a web server platform, this site is an excellent resource.

iSketch - iSketch offers a live interactive variation on the beloved board game Pictionary. Players join in a "room" in which one of the participants sketch the secret word while the remaining players have three minutes to figure out the word. Lots of fun!

Cyber Cinema - Chronicles the history of computers in films from the early 20th century to the present. Explore numerous analyses of some great sci-fi films, view intriguing stills and sample sound clips until your apocalyptic heart is content.

Fashion TV - Fashion TV has launched a content rich and happening site which features the latest fashion trends from around the world. The site includes online runway shows, worldwide fashion magazines, a designer database (where you can read about and see slides of their collections), bios and pictures of the world's top models and much more.

Legacy of the Amazon - Project Orinco is dedicated to preserving the legacy of the indigenous societies of the Venezuelan Amazon. The site brings together objects from twelve indigenous groups of the region in an effort to preserve - and share - the stories of these cultures.

SHORT TAKES:

Time Cave - The idea is simple: drop an email message into a time cave and tell it when to come out. It'll stay there for as long as you'd like. Once the message's time comes, it's speedily sent on its way back toward you (or whoever you addressed it to). You can use it as a free reminder service or just to send your future self a kind note.

The Quackatorium - This site offers a look at some of these devices from the turn of the century including, the Radio Disease Killer, the Faradic Battery and many other machines which failed to live up to the promise they held.

The 123's of the ABC's - Counterspace delivers a primer on typography that will satisfy both design buffs and the novice user. Browse through a scrolling timeline on the origin of different fonts and view information on the five major typeface classifications including their history and modern use.

Let's Eat Out - In 1994 he launched Dine.com, enabling thousands of people to share their reviews. It is the largest restaurant review site online. A Great Bookmark!

Guide to Unpopular Music - Kenny G, (no relation to the big time musician) is a widely respected DJ at New Jersey's WFMU. His site features reviews and articles from ground breaking artists you've probably never heard of, but after reading his take on things, you'd wished you had.

Seeing Stars - This site tells you everything you might want to know about the stars including what restaurants they own, where they live, play, pray, shop, dine and are laid to rest. It also offers a unique virtual (photo) tour of Greater Los Angeles.

Doing it the Hard Way - Rube Goldberg (1883-1970) was a humorist and political cartoonist, known for his drawings of wildly intricate machines that performed simple tasks. His wacky cartoons depict elaborate and ridiculous devices designed to accomplish the most mundane tasks.

The Web is a Stage - Upstage is a community dedicated to supporting artists by offering 25 MB's of free web space in which an artist may upload text, audio, video and image files for viewing. Browse through sections on visual artists, musicians and performers, and be sure to check out "Featured Artists" links in each section.

Medical Breakthroughs - This site is an excellent resource for top-quality and thought-provoking news stories that offer solutions to problems, tips on staying healthy, and compelling stories. Be the "First to Know" about the latest medical news by signing up for their free weekly e-mail newsletter highlighting the new reports on their site each week. 

Trading Up - Select the product(s) you want to trade, and then select the product(s) you want to purchase. They will provide you with a single price quote for your complete transaction usually within an hour. You can even keep your product until your new one arrives.

Old Computers = Aquariums - If you have an old computer sitting around, you may be inspired by the art of Jim Lower, who has turned his old Macs and PCs into very cool computer fish tanks. You can follow his plans on converting your old computers, or if you prefer, Jim will build one for you. It is the perfect gift for the techie who has everything!

Free Domain Registration - Continuing with the theme of "the Internet wants to be free", comes free domain registration services. The only caveat is that you will have to accept some promotional items from third party companies.

The Free Site - Staying in the free zone, this is the mother of all internet free sites. All the sites are reviewed and represent the best freebies available on the Net. It is updated daily.

The Blue Book for Everything - Many of us have used The Kelley Blue Book to obtain the fair price for a used car we planned to buy or sell. Strong Numbers has taken this concept one step further by creating a site to provide pricing information for the huge commerce market of collectibles and used goods.

NPR: America's Greatest 20th Century Music - National Public Radio offers their selection of the 100 greatest tunes of the 20th Century. What results is a wonderful stroll down memory lane with tunes by the likes of Louis Armstrong, James Brown, The Beach Boys, Woody Guthrie, Paul Simon and many great American artists. 

After the Fall: Russia in Transition - Time recently launched this beautiful exhibit by Anthony Suau, a freelance photojournalist who was contracted to spend 10 years documenting the aftermath of the fall of the Berlin Wall. The exhibition is a study in the resultant chaos that ensued in the countries of the former Soviet bloc. 

Computer Museum - With one of the most thoughtful and comprehensive listings of the first generation of personal computers, this site may give computer users a nostalgic feeling for our desktop friends. Browse by manufacturer and view technical details on individual models ranging from the Apple IIe to the Altair. *sigh*

Britney Splits the Atom - Hit that radioactive transistor one more time at this hilarious site, in which Ms. Spears explains everything from edge emitting lasers to the Fermi-Dirac distribution function. Bored? Inspirational pics of Britney will support you on your way to becoming an expert in semiconductor physics!

Near-Death Experiences and the Afterlife - Kevin Williams, grandson of Reverend James McPheron, has created a content rich and inspirational site devoted to revealing the truth behind the near-death experience. You may find you do not need to have a near-death experience in order to be transformed by one.

A Century of Nonviolent Conflict - This companion site to the PBS TV series, examines these movements and chronicles the tactics and philosophy of the nonviolence movement.

My Private Island - Do you have dreams of dropping out and living on your own island? If so, check out Farhad Vladi, the world's largest broker of private islands. You don't need to be a magnate to own an island, he recently sold one off the coast of Nova Scotia for $6000.

A Collectors Guide to Vintage Handcuffs - Joseph Lauher has an unusual hobby, he collects handcuffs. He can identify every manacle and leg iron on a Houdini poster, knows how they worked and why some didn't. If you're interested in the lighter side of restraints, you will enjoy this site.

Don't Leave Your Body Without It - In either case, "How to Talk New Age" provides a refreshing take on the New Age movement. With explanations on everything from the Sufis to the difference between good and bad vibes, this site is entertaining for both the would be guru and the agnostic alike.

Virtual Computer Terminal - InViso has announced eshades, a pair of glasses which allows private viewing of a virtual 19" color monitor, along with eCase, a pocket device that carries web pages and documents you download from your PC.

We Don't Know What it is, But we Like it. - Nosepilot.com is an example of what you can do with a lot of creativity and some free time using Macromedia's Flash. No pointing, clicking, scrolling, or navigating are necessary here. Just sit back and enjoy the show.

The Living Room Candidate - The American Museum of the Moving Image is presenting a video history of political advertising in presidential elections dating back to 1952. This online exhibition contains 183 television commercials, from every presidential election from 1952 to 1996.

Out of Africa - Kilimanjaro is one of the most breathtaking and difficult climbs in the world. Located near the Kenya border, its peak reaches 19,340 feet and is the highest point in Africa. This site includes information on everything from the climates and history of Kilimanjaro to the necessary gear and conditioning it takes to make the climb.

Parking Lot Videos - Planet Krulik contains all of Krulik's movies, which include everything from a drive with Ernest Borgnine on his bus "The Sunburn", to a concert video of one of the most acclaimed Elvis impersonators, Michael Hoover. Be sure to keep an eye out for his latest project, the "Harry Potter Parking Lot."

Return to Gilligan's Island - Come and spend some time with the original "Survivors": Gilligan, the Skipper, Mary Anne, Ginger, and the Howels at this hilarious and heart felt site devoted to Gilligan's Island. The Bob Denver Fan Site includes everything from behind the scenes photos, to info on his current weekly radio show with his wife, "Denver and Denver".

Tempus Fugit: Time Flies - Explores the concept of time through a fascinating online exhibition of multi-layered art. View everything from Andy Warhol's "Baseball", an example of capturing fleeting moments in time, to an ancient Chinese Scroll, the "Twelve Views of Landscapes", which is read in entire columns, rather than in a single word or moment.

Schubert Archive - Offers a glimpse at their archive including scripts, letters, animations, photos and posters of the thousands of shows the famous brothers produced. It is a rare glimpse at a national treasure, for the archive is normally only open to specialists.

Turning Imagination into Reality - You also can design your own model airplane, custom board game pieces, dolls that look like you and just about anything you can imagine.

Whack-a-Flack - Stress Release - Choose the pesky PR agency that you'd like to send a "media kit" to, and have at them with this fun filled shockwave game. It is also good for killing time and relieving any work related stress you may have.

Dennis Miller Evaluation - The addition of Dennis Miller to the Monday Night Football broadcasting team has raised more than a few eyebrows. Many commentators and fans have been blasting Miller, insisting that he is a distraction at best. Maybe he's just misunderstood.

Ah, You Shouldn't Have. Really. - What can you get for the person who has everything? Poop Moose is self-described as "the most impractical gift you could possibly buy". Check out this unique candy dispenser that's a definite conversation piece.

A nifty service, and it's free!

Sign Language Dictionary - HandSpeak is an online dictionary for sign language. With an impressive database of words (over 3000) and handy animated gifs to accompany each word, this site is a treasure for those interested in learning how to sign.

Free Computer Training - Offers over 200 online training courses in everything from the basics of Microsoft Word to NT system admin to SQL Server programming. All the courses are free and professionally developed. It is an excellent resource for both the novice and sophisticate alike.

The Great Debate - The Museum of Broadcast Communications in Chicago provides a history of televised presidential debates at this fascinating new site by offering video clips, news items, essays and commentary from any of the televised presidential debates.
