The Inner Body

An ideal reference site for students or those who just want to know what the doctor is talking about when he refers to your duodenum, the Inner Body uncovers what's inside us all.

Pass your cursor over one of ten human systems, from the skeletal to the digestive, to view hundreds of graphics, animations and links, as the inside workings of the human body reveal themselves with each click. Further passes take you through images and text that make you see the entire complex mechanism of the human body as a most amazing machine.

She Explores - Guerrilla Style

Mercedes, Jennifer and Argentina are American-Latinas from the New York barrios leaving in December 2001 on a road trip through South America, from the ruins in Peru to the Carnival in Brazil. The guerrilla girls are sending the road show home to web users via an online adventure that promises to record every detail.

Visitors can register for a passport that lets them log into the "anything-can-happen" tour as it unfolds, getting firsthand accounts, chatting live with the adventurers, reading their daily journals and experiencing everything that happens on the road. Plus, the three are looking for a fourth: submit your online application by October 31 and you could join the adventure.

Just Look at Yourself

Take a close look at yourself - then take a picture. That's the idea of The Mirror Project, a collection of photos of people taking photos of themselves in a variety of reflective surfaces all over the world.

Portraiture more than narcissism, the project started in 1999 with the idea that people are less likely to put on a "happy face" when confronted with themselves. Hundreds of people worldwide seem to agree and have captured and shared self-images seen in store windows, in a spoon, in an ashtray and in their own mirrored sunglasses. Snap yourself and send it in to join the gallery of surprisingly beautiful images.

SHORT TAKES:

Am I ANNOYING or NOT?

From "survivor" Susan Hawk to Jerry Lewis, annoying is a matter of opinion. Express yours at this online poll where you vote for irritating celebrities and other notables. After voting, see the ratings, join the chat at the Annoyatorium, or put your own bad self to the test with the "Am I ANNOYING or NOT" quiz.

Telecom Talk

From fiber optics to telegraphy, those telecom guys give even a common word like 'hit' special meaning. Here, all of those seemingly simple words and indecipherable acronyms like LANs, MANs and WANs are decoded in one easy-to-navigate place.

Funniest Joke in the World

Telling a good joke may be a science, but Laugh Lab is taking it seriously in a huge experiment to find the world's funniest joke. This site, the stage for the largest scientific study ever conducted into humor, figures everyone's got a joke and is determined to root through them all, let visitors vote using the "Laugh-o-meter," and submit their own side-splitters.

Guggenheim's Internet Art

The Guggenheim, always a vanguard of contemporary art, has created Guggenheim.com, an online destination for art on the web. More than just a lush site of stunning images selected by curators of specially commissioned online works, it's also a multi-dimensional museum.

True to its reputation for innovation, the Guggenheim really seems to get it. The art here is showcased not just as image, but also as an invitation to participate. Featured exhibits, like the Art of the Motorcycle, are both image- and info-rich. The Collections Archive holds dynamic exhibitions presented here exclusively. Performance Art offers contemporary masters of theater, dance and music, and the Culture Navigator lists global happenings in the world's most vital arts cities.

Vintage Music

Devoted to preserving vintage music from the early decades of the 20th century, Dismuke's Virtual Talking Machine is one man's effort to share his personal collection of 78 rpm discs with a new generation more turned onto new technology.

To get their attention, he's transcribed it all onto Real Audio. With over 125 jazz, dance band, swing and vocal recordings from the Roaring 20s through the Great Depression; 60 recordings from the pre-microphone days of 1900 through 1925; and Dismuke's Hit of the Week, featuring a vintage recording from the 20s or 30s, it all conspires to make the old new again.

Federal Reserve 101

The Feds must know that lots of us pretend to understand headlines that blare "Feds Lower Prime." So they created FED 101, an economic education web site geared toward high school kids - but you can bet its closet audience is grown-ups who still think they should just make more money when things get tight.

Besides the history and structure of the Federal Reserve System, the site has cool simulations like one that shows how monetary policy decisions affect the economy and the Inflation Simulator, where users can type in a year and a dollar amount to find out what it's worth years later - like a 1950 buck that today equals a whopping $7.39.

Pirated Sites

One of zillions of clever, unique and great-looking sites made possible by Blogger, "push button publishing for the masses," Pirated Sites is mostly a collection of, well, pirated sites.

With eclectic taste and a fondness for chatting about the blurred lines between pirating, listing, parodying, sharing and linking, the site is a treasure chest of what's cool, hip and different in web space. Besides links to sites where graphic experimentation is king, users will find miscellany like Metafilter threads to follow, good stuff to pirate, and originals and copies side-by-side for you to judge.

All That Jazz - John Coltrane

Before Jazz great John Coltrane died in 1967, he created the most expressive music in a genre known for eloquence, the most innovative melodies in a style known for experimentation. Thirty-four years after his death, his music is present more than ever before, heard in films, television and, mostly, in the musicianship of talented young artists.

This year, in honor of his 75th birthday, the John Coltrane web site was created as a place to experience the life and music of saxophonist Coltrane, with photos, biography, discography and info about the John Coltrane Foundation, established to provide scholarships for young musicians, and Jowcol, the John Coltrane publishing company.
