Iraqi Leaflets

Even in the hyper-high tech 21st century, we resort to tried-and-true ways to get the word out. And even in the US military. See leaflets being dropped over Iraq at Leaflet Gallery, from the United States Central Command.

On March 9, 2003, Coalition aircraft dropped 180,000 leaflets in Arabic and English warning readers on the ground "Do Not Use Weapons of Mass Destruction" and the consequences of doing so. Another leaflet reports that Coalition forces do not wish to harm "the noble people of Iraq." Says the press release: "The Coalition hopes to protect Iraqi lives and deter Iraqi aggression by providing relevant, factual information to both Iraqi civilians and military troops." Let's hope it works.

The Future We Were Promised

Living on wheels is the heart of both America and the illustrations at Lost Highways.org, a collection of historic material that seeks to define and preserve the design of early American transportation and architecture through the eyes of futuristic illustrator Art Radebaugh.

In an old studio that held a giant camera on narrow gauge railroad tracks among other fascinations, site creators discovered a collection of negatives from Radebaugh's portfolio. Enter through one of four portals: Negatives, your intro to Radebaugh's world; Automobiles, his designs for Chrysler/Desoto/Dodge and cars of the future; Ads, showing a working illustrator at work; and Syndicated, his weekly cartoon strip. If you get hooked, visit the Museum Store for a selection of colorful Radebaugh prints.

SHORT TAKES

Drainspotting

Google Watch

Many web surfers are googly-eyed over Google, the popular search engine. But Google Watch is less than enchanted and explains its charge that Google's monopoly, algorithms, and privacy policies are a major force in the struggle over the soul of the web.

Urban Adventure in Rotterdam

Adventurers need not travel far from home to see the world anew. Learn how to find adventure in your own city by following the explorers at Urban Adventure in Rotterdam.

Go "buildering" or explore strange, deserted places and the psycho-geography of Rotterdam, where "everything is climbable." Read the notes and see the photos as adventurers climb air traffic control towers, smokestacks, bridges and airport towers. Clamber underground as hundreds of people drive overhead or gaze down from the solitude of steel mountains and concrete cliffs. Dig through deserted places like the metro track of Charleroi, a complex, winding city. Urban adventurers find graffiti in Oldenburg, ghosts along the highway and chase the sunset above viaducts.

Cereal Box Characters

Teachers may not like hearing that many of us were motivated to learn to read - really read - by staring at the goofy bears and tigers on our cereal boxes before we even arrived at school. Find long-lost friends like the Sugar Crisp Bears and L.C. Leprechaun of "magically delicious" Lucky Charms fame at Topher's Breakfast Cereal Character Guide.

The guide leads visitors to favorite cereal box characters from the early 1900's to the present. Just click on a boxtop from Kellogg's, General Mills, Quaker and other major labels to start your visit with the old breakfast club. Enjoy lots of nostalgic images and info on over 750 characters, cast your vote for your favorite and see if Tony the Tiger outpolls Cap'n Crunch.

Totally off the Record

Who hasn't had an embarrassing, outrageous, funny, or just feel-good moment at work? Share yours at Totally Off The Record, where you can tell the story you just can't keep down any longer and not lose your job in the telling.

Enjoy the work stories of others, like the nurse who witnessed a patient's spouse shatter the in-room toilet. Or the Phoenix fire crew who fulfilled a dying child's wish to be a fireman with a day at the station, a real fire uniform, his own yellow slicker and rubber boots. Read stories organized by occupation or post your own. It's totally anonymous, totally work-related and, unlike your day job, totally fun.

Very Boy George

Boy George was a major pop icon of the 70s, created memorable music and made it OK to be whoever the heck you wanted to be. At Very Boy George, the boy's still tumbling.

Read the Dizzy Diary where George reminisces about gal pal Cyndi Lauper and bares his anxiety over meeting his idol David Bowie. Karma Cookbook combines 90 recipes with George's first-hand accounts of how a healthy diet can transform your life. Paint a Starr gives beauty advice to "help you look more presentable but not make you a better person," from the guy who says that, without make-up, his face looks like an Irish potato. Visit the gallery of photos, shop the Drag Bag and write the George at It's All About You.
