Doctors Without Borders

Doctors Without Borders is a not-for-profit organization that sends courageous physicians all over the world to help those whose countries have been racked by war, poverty and disease. The charity's most noble quality is that it values and saves human lives everywhere regardless of race, class, religion or political affiliation.

The dangerous and often tragic reality that faces the organization's doctors has been chronicled in a new series entitled "Doctors Without Borders; Life in the Field", currently airing on the National Geographic Channel. The web site has a detailed program schedule along with profiles of the brave individuals who risk their lives traveling to war-torn countries like Sierra Leone and Afghanistan to help those in need.

World-Wide Sushi Restaurant Reference

Sushi lovers are advised to bookmark this site immediately, as a virtual yellow pages for raw fish restaurants across the globe. The site's most notable feature is its extensive index of restaurants which can be referenced whether you are searching for sushi in New York City, The Middle East or even Guatemala.

In addition to the long list of raw restaurants, Sushiref.com also has a lot of useful resources for both neophytes and seasoned sushi snobs. There is a glossary of japanese terms, a section on 'sushi etiquette', even links to sushi clubs and societies.

I Love Carnivorous Plants

Ilovecarnivorousplants.com proudly features a 'great selection of meat eating foliage', from the legendary Venus Flytrap to more obscure green killers like the Butterwort and the Cobra Lily (whose forked tongues mercilessly devour unlucky insects as they fly by).

More than just an information resource, this is the premier spot on the Web to purchase prepotted and 'bare root' carnivorous plants. All plants and seeds for sale are part of a personal collection and are not taken from the field. Each specimen comes with specific growing instructions so you can keep your killer pet happy and healthy for as long as it lives, just be careful not to end up as plant food!

SHORT TAKES

How to Play Roofball

The requirements are few (two people, a tennis ball and a roof) but the entertainment is endless. Learn how to have fun the old fashioned way with a good old game of roofball. The sport is not only a fun but according to the site's founders, a great 'cardiovascular activity' as well.

The world's most esteemed money list takes a great twist with the release of The Forbes Fictional Fifteen. The list estimates the net worth of fictional characters from literature, cartoons, film and television such as Gordon Gekko, Michael Douglas' character in the movie 'Wall Street'. Can you guess who the richest one of all is?

Mr. Otto in "Olympics"

The painful adventures of Mr. Otto give Itchy and Scratchy a run for their money. Part of the Flashtoons website, this episode places Mr. Otto in the intense arena of the Olympic Games.

Under the direction of Bruno Bozzeto, Mr. Otto competes in every imaginable olympic event from cycling to track and field. Watch for the boxing match, which ends more kindly than most of the other sports.

Calendars through the Ages

In many ways we measure human life with calendars; using the days of a week, the months in a year, the years in a lifetime. It is with calendars that we record our progress and our endeavors, and consequentially our psycho "logical view of our age and ourselves". But what is the history of the seemingly immovable calendar that we live by, what is it based upon and how does it affect our everyday lives?

What makes this site so cool is that it helps answer some of these questions by discussing the astronomical foundation of the calendar year, defining the different types of religious calendars from Judaic to Islamic, and explaining commonly misunderstood events such as Daylights Savings and leap years. Unfortunately, you may discover that you are actually a day older than you thought.

Photocartoonist Extraordinaire

Featuring the portfolio of Kat.Caverly, formerly a greeting card photographer, Photocartoonist is a collection of photos of funny people looking funny, many with funny captions written below the photos to make them even funnier.

Visitors will see babies, "Beasties," (mostly dogs and cats) a series in which seemingly normal adults have been talked into posing with an odd set of "liberty" sunglasses, fake animal noses and Lite beer cans. You can also chat with Kat., who promises to be online at least once daily, subscribe to receive updates and daily photo-cartoons or check out the e-greeting cards.

Bar Culture
