Locus Novus

Locus Novus is a 'synthesis between text and image', an interesting collage of art, literature and technology that will leave visitors wanting more. Contributing artists use a visual canvas on which words, images and graphic art converge to create an original and moving experience.

Do not miss the piece entitled 'I Can't Read Borges' by Roptar Zybot. There are a lot of other cool contributions that aim to 'question the conventional means of perception'. Enjoy this site for the wonderful experience that it is!

World Beard and Moustache Championships

Most likely you were not able to make it to Carson City, Nevada this Nov 1st for the fuzziest day of the year, The World Beard and Moustache Championships 2003. There is no reason to panic, as you can catch all the hairy highlights on the event's official website.

Representatives from over 100 countries were in attendance, including contestants from as far away as Turkey and The Ukraine. View images of current participants or scroll through the gallery of past Facial Hair World Champions.

The Art of Portraiture

For over a hundred and fifty years individuals and families have used photography to preserve themselves for posterity. In photo studios around the world portrait photographers are paid to capture their subjects with the austere perfection of an oil painter, all in the blink of an eye.

The rigid but beautiful art of portraiture is honored by an international group of writers at this Colors Magazine website. Contributors offer graceful insight into the time-honored craft of portrait photography, with elegant descriptions of photo studios in countries ranging from England to India and Lebanon. Visitors can also get tips on setting up their own studio, taking great portraits, even instructions for constructing a 'pinhole camera' of their own.

SHORT TAKES

The Monkey Shakespeare Simulator

Many of us have heard the myth that if enough monkeys bang away on enough typewriters for enough time, eventually they will create the works of William Shakespeare. You can help test the simian theory by simply leaving this site's page up on your computer whenever you are online, and let the Monkey Shakespeare Simulator do all the hard work for you.

Sears Catalogue 1971

Get ready to laugh at the past when you revisit this particular issue of the legendary Sears Catalogue. In addition to the original pictures and clothing descriptions, the site's editors have added their own hysterical commentary on the catalogue's outdated stylistic offerings.

Vietnam: Journeys of Body, Mind, and Spirit

A joint exhibition by The American Museum of Natural History in New York City and The Vietnam Museum of Ethnology in Hanoi, 'Vietnam: Journeys of Body, Mind, and Spirit' takes a profound look into the many elements that make up the country's cultural diversity. The exhibit will be on display for the next year and offers novel insight into a country that many Americans were wholly unfamiliar with before the onset of the Vietnam War.

The website breaks the project up into 'journeys' that depict a specific aspect of Vietnamese society, such as 'Life and Death' or 'People and Goods'. Each 'journey' uses photography, written description and video to take visitors along the many cultural pathways that make up today's Vietnam. Tickets are also available to visit the museum, where the exhibition will run through March of 2004.

Backyard Roller Coaster

Why go to a theme park when you can build one yourself? Jeremy Reid, a young engineer from Oklahoma, has done just that by designing and constructing his own personal wooden rollercoaster. He has also built a self-titled website on which to show off his fully functional backyard coaster.

Jeremy's site contains all the details of the 17-foot tall, single-car Coney Island-style rollercoaster currently situated conveniently behind his house. Along with images and a video 'simulator', Jeremy provides a ton of technical and miscellaneous information on the coaster's construction, as well as a list of magazines and radio stations that have covered his 'amusing' project.

For Our "Matchless" Friends

Now associated more with serious illness than glamour, smoking was once as ubiquitous and socially acceptable as drinking a glass of wine. As the number of smokers has steadily decreased, so has the prevalence of the artful smoking paraphernalia that once littered our country's bars and restaurants.

Vintage matchbooks are the most collectable and appreciated remnants of tobacco's heyday. Much more than a smoking accessory, these matchbook covers offer us a glimpse into the American culture they once lit up. The site's editor analyzes the advertisements and style of each matchbook in his collection with the zest and knowledge of a true collector.

Luciferous Logolepsy

Philologists will find themselves spending a lot of time on this site, which contains a list of over nine thousand obscure English words. The Luciferous Logolepsy, which roughly translates into 'an illuminated obsession with words', seeks to drag these words into 'the light of day' for all of us to learn and enjoy.

The archive of arcane words is listed alphabetically, which makes the many entries much easier to find than to use in a sentence. The straightforward definitions make The Luciferous Logolepsy idoneous for wordsmiths of all levels.

Nasher Sculpture Center

The 55,000 square-foot Nasher Sculpture Center opened last month and is one of the only institutions in the world dedicated to the study and display of modern sculpture. Located in downtown Dallas, the Center has over three hundred sculptures on display including the entire collection of Raymond and Patty Nasher.

The official website is essentially a tour of the museum, its awesome collection, its development and its mission. Visitors will enjoy looking through images of the Center's many special pieces, including works by masters such as Brancusi, Rodin, Picasso and de Kooning. There is an online store opening in time for Christmas, as well as a section that offers information for those interested in individual and corporate
sponsorship opportunities.
