The Beatles in Rishikesh

The Beatles' pilgrimage to Rishikesh, gateway to the Himalayas, home to ashrams and destination for seekers of classical Indian yoga, is recorded at The Beatles in Rishikesh.com, a rare photographic portrait of the world's greatest band. The Fab Four incorporated the sitar in their classic song Norwegian Wood, both changing the sound and direction of pop music and beginning their own affair with Indian mysticism that took them to the ashram of the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.

The Beatles in Rishikesh is photographer Paul Saltzman's unique, personal record of his historic meeting with Lennon, McCartney, Harrison and Starr. No professional photographers were allowed in the ashram, so here are previously unpublished photographs and personal anecdotes of encounters with 1960s personalities who visited the ashram: Mia Farrow, Donovan, and Mike Love of the Beach Boys.

The Veggie Table

Yes, vegetarians can enjoy a Thanksgiving feast, and the Veggie Table shows how to stuff yourself silly without meat on Turkey Day, from crudités appetizers, through a main course of ratatouille or spanakopita to a "no-fault" pumpkin pie.

With cooking tips, vegetarian recipes for comfort food and kids' meals, tips and links on shopping for clothing, cookbooks, herbs and spices; meat substitutes, tofu and yoga, this free resource offers all kinds of info to vegetarians of all kinds and those simply interested in healthy eating, animal rights or the environment. Vegetarians come in many varieties: from semi-vegetarians who eat no red or white meat to raw foodists who eat only raw food. They all have a home here, including Chat Room and forums; recipes updated weekly; shopping links for hard-to-find products; and a free e-newsletter.

FilmWise

Test how wise you are about film at Film Wise.com, where trivia quizzes morph into audio and visual puzzlers only the most rabid film fans can solve. The site began with the question "Can you guess what movie this screenshot is from?" and eventually the puzzles became more complex.

The popular "Invisibles" are screenshots in which the players are be-headed, so naming the film is a challenge. Visual quizzes include screenshots with random questions about the scene, and Text Questions of the Day are equally cryptic. The current contest offers characters' faces taken in their youth but plopped onto their grown-up bodies to be identified. Shop for Film Wise logo products; visit Forums to rave or rant about movies; share info on upcoming movies and links to trailers and DVDs; or read and post film buzz.

SHORT TAKES

The Making of a Brick

The name is from the Danish for "play well," and play at Lego is both its name and its nature. Visitors to the Lego web site experience "the essential ingredient in a child's growth and development … " with plenty of opportunities to play through games, comics and movies. Macromedia Flash Player is required, downloadable on the site.

Grover Is Bitter

"The Sad Story Behind the Loveable Smile" at ZeroBoutique.com tells, chapter by chapter, the truth behind the myth of the loveable fuzzy blue monster from Sesame Street. Viewers were charmed by the irreverence of the endearing Grover, but ZeroBoutique claims a brave exterior hid the insecurities of a monster so unsure of himself he wouldn't watch his own performances.

Sound of the Big Bang

Science & Technology News Service at New Scientist.com reports, based on an analysis of the radiation left over from the cataclysm, that the Big Bang sounded more like a deep hum. Hear audio files of the big hum that can be played on a PC.

Statesman or Skatesman

If politicians are boring people, surely British politicians must be the dullest of all. See British pols at play at Statesman or Skatesman? where former U.K. political science student Jason Whiley has collected the replies to a query he posed to over 150 members of Parliament and Lords: "Have you ever been on a skateboard, roller skates, a space hopper, a go-kart, a death slide, a non-motorised scooter; a BMX bike?"

Here he presents all 78 replies, including those from three Prime Ministers, five Chancellors, six Foreign Secretaries, four Home Secretaries, and three Speakers of the House of Commons. See Fun at Number Ten, the facts and figures of fun in power, and a gallery of images of pols like Margaret Thatcher on a toboggan and former prime minister Edward Heath on a skateboard. Actual replies are reproduced, along with a photo gallery.

Abnormal Design

Graphic design is all over the map these days. The group of portfolios at Abnormal Design.com is a curious collection of organic banners, logos and desktops, dominated by blacks whites and charcoals.

The collection of design portfolios, design books, scrapbooks, even poetry that operate way outside the lines includes work for each year back to 2000, from Black Eye and Don't Look Down in 2000 to the oddly disturbing Twin Sticker of 2003and a 9-page poetry scrapbook. With links to other outside-the-lines design sites, like Pixel Surgeon and Design Is Kinky.

Galactic Hunter

Keeping Star Wars collectors on target is the mission of Galactic Hunter.com. Pity the poor collector who can easily become sabotaged or diverted in the quest for space-fantasy adventure collectibles.

The site offers special shopping links to vendors from Amazon to Toys R Us, and Brian's Toy Newsletter hooks up visitors to vintage figures now in stock, including rare vintage French Meccano boxed figures, some going for upwards of $300. Top News and Spotlight feature recent price drops, product availability and upcoming releases, like the news that four figures based on Star Wars: A New Hope are due in 2004. A poll asks collectors what they need most, like "Which Ultra Asst. set would you most likely purchase if it were made?" Special Sectors include an Image Bank, Events, Special Reports and Forums where collectors can trade tips.

Photo Studio

Realism made more palatable is how the creator of Photo Studio describes the long-practiced art of portraiture. Photographic portraits are on view here from photo portrait studios worldwide: from India's Kuslum Studio in to Chicago's Latina Foto.

Visitors are invited to submit their own professional studio portraits, and people from Madrid, Spain, to Canton, Ohio, have done so: proving the creator's theory that the satisfaction of sitting for a portrait is the sense that, if only briefly, life is under control, you are being recorded and you will be remembered. The site also offers articles on How To Set Up Your Own Photo Studio, How To Build a Pinhole Camera, and Rules for Taking a Good Portrait: Rule #1: Don't place your subject too far away from the camera."

Football Outsiders

The game plan of Football Outsiders.com is to be the most original football site on the Web, with a daily blog of the best Web NFL articles; others written by fans for fans with a fan's obsession; a twist on fantasy football called the Loser league; and a series of new in-depth statistics not found elsewhere.

The stats analyze skill players, offensive and defensive lines, and total team efficiency, are updated weekly and challenge conventional wisdom about the game. The Outsiders are hardcore fans interested in real games and real stadiums, who post their ramblings on topics like "Splitting the Overtime Pizza." Game betting is offered via Sports InterAction, the Canadian online sportsbook that is the first to be fully licensed and regulated in North America.

OOo-(_)-oOOo--------

We have so much to be grateful for. What a precious privilege it is.

Rather than being aware of that, the mind, out of habit, is usually
searching for what is wrong and for how to correct what is wrong.

Obviously one aspect of the survival of the organism is seeing what is
wrong and fixing what is wrong - so that one can be fed, clothed, and
housed.

I am not saying this is wrong except that at this point, where you are,
there is much more to be grateful for than is usually acknowledged. And
even if it is acknowledged it is brushed aside with "I am not really
that lucky" because you don't want to tempt the gods to send down some
bad luck, or you have guilt about being so lucky without deserving it.

This precious lifetime, which could end in an instant and will
certainly end sooner than one is ready, is here with these
circumstances, just as they are.

What divine good luck.

In this moment there is more to be grateful for than there is to fix.
And if you ignore this truth, or trivialize this truth, or feel guilty
about this truth, then the clarity of mind that allows real
investigation is missing
.
