DepicT! 2003 is a competition for those with short attention spans, filmmakers of few words and images, or those who wish to say it fast and simple: a contest for micro-movies under 90 seconds. At DepicT! view the winner of The DepicT! 2003 competition, announced on November 15 at the Brief Encounters Award Ceremony. TV commercials are examples of tiny movies viewed daily. Most are less than a minute long, some last only a few seconds, yet they tell a story and capture an emotion. Short shorts, the argument goes, can deliver many of the qualities and strengths of longer forms and they leave no room for excess, demanding a tight structure and clear purpose. View this year's top competitors and past winners. The Picture of Everything Five years ago, artist Howard Hallis drew a picture of Spider-Man that grew into The Picture of Everything, a drawing that now includes super heroes to religious figures, space ships to family and friends. See
the single drawing that captures just about all you can imagine. Hallis
started with comic book characters and one thing led to another. He added
The Beatles, rock stars, movie stars, space ships, fantasy buildings,
historical figures, religious figures, famous vehicles, video game characters,
ancient wonders of the world, famous art works, corporate logos, flags
of the world, and robots all in one giant picture. View the entire image,
sections of it, or if you want to own a piece of everything, http://www.thepictureofeverything.com/ Harlem Live Kids aged 13 to 21 explore journalism, video, web design, public speaking and administration skills at Harlem Live, a showcase web publication written and created by teens in Harlem and throughout New York City, "a growing pool of youth with good character who have technical and communication skills and a multitude of options." fostering understanding through diversity. Step back in time and sit down with your 13-year-old self to offer advice to the poor teen you were at Advice For Your 13 Year Old Self. Offer one piece of inspirational advice that would make that kid's life better, like Lou's advice to her 13-year-old Lou to "take some chances. Don't be so scared of everything!" http://www.adviceforyourself.com/

View New York City street signs from 14th Street to 42nd Street at New York City Signs. There are tens of thousands of signs in this area-likely 30,000 just from 1st Ave. to 11th or 12th Avenues-so the site offers highlights, with an emphasis on vintage signs and those dating from the mid 1980's, many that no longer exist. But how did it come to mean junk e-mail and how is Monty Python implicated? Etymology is the study of word origins, explored in depth at wordorigins.org. Search the list of 400 words and phrases whose origins are given on the site because they are especially interesting or because some bit of folklore, whether true or false, is associated with the origin. Or join the Discussion to ask a question or answer one. A monthly e- newsletter, A Way with Words, addresses etymology, slang, grammar and usage, and general topics regarding words and language. Corrosion of Historical Landmarks The destruction or degradation of historical landmarks by atmospheric corrosion, kinetic corrosion, soil corrosion, human error and efforts to save or restore them is traced at Corrosion of Historical Landmarks. Such destruction, whether by natural or human cause, can have an impact on the nation, state, city or community that faces its loss and can have anthropological, cultural, military, political, architectural, economic, technical, religious and other impacts. So in 1969 the ASM Historical Landmarks Designation was established to identify sites that have played a prominent part in the discovery, development and growth of metals and metalworking and later including all engineered materials. See the damage and efforts to save and restore such landmarks as the Eiffel Tower, Great Buddha, Statue of Liberty and the Titanic, among many others. http://www.corrosion-doctors.org/Landmarks/Frames.htm Yesterday's Office Calculators, typewriters, stenography machines and other clunky ancient office tools are the stuff of Yesterday's Office. Collectors of old office equipment show their valuables, trade, read about and view the treasures other collectors have assembled. Others, stuck in cubicles in front of PCs, can take a trip into the surprisingly recent but greatly altered history of the office. See The Marchant 1911 calculator with controls like an earlier pinwheel design but with a crank for clearing the added number register. Or the 1964 Mathatron and its ancestors -- circular slide rules, cylindrical ones and that slide rule stored in the pocket protectors of '60s engineering students. Learn how the QWERTY keyboard beat out alternative keyboards, and the must-have office tool that sat on every desktop since the turn of the century, the telephone. With links to collections, museums and exhibits; classified ads; and a discussion forum. http://www.yesterdaysoffice.com **********Advertisement**************

Digital Michelangelo Project Using cutting-edge technology and algorithms developed at Stanford, a team of faculty, staff and students from Stanford and the University of Washington spent a year in Italy scanning the works of Michelangelo to produce a set of 3D computer models to make available to scholars. See their efforts and the work-in-progress at the Digital Michelangelo Project. The group first designed, built and tested scanning equipment to capture chisel marks smaller than a millimeter. They scanned the David-which consisted of 2 billion polygons and 7,000 color images-and other statuary. Now the team has built a full-resolution model of St Matthew and several medium-resolution models of the head of David, and has acquired an ultraviolet fluorescence map of David showing where waxes and other organic materials have been applied over the centuries. Conservators are using it to plan a major cleaning of the statue. Explore the models of Michelangelo's statues by using a viewer on the site. http://graphics.stanford.edu/projects/mich/ SUBSCRIBERS' SITES - Many of our subscribers have fascinating on-line projects.
