Science is increasingly a part of mainstream media, grabbing headlines from JLo and Ben, so get up-to-speed on hot science at Your Amazing Brain, to take part in real-life experiments and test yourself with games, illusions and brain-benders. What are stem cells, and why are they such a big deal? How are they related to human cloning? You know if you're a lefty, but do you know if you're right- or left-eyed? The Wellcome Trust, a UK biomedical charity that promotes research and education to improve human health, helped build this fully interactive site. In Super Senses, learn how sense organs link us with the outside world through touching, seeing, hearing, tasting and smelling. In Love and Sex, explore how science helps us understand relationships, why we fall in love and how contraceptives work. In Your Memory, test your different types of memory and learn how to develop a range of talents. http://www.youramazingbrain.org/ The Decline of Fashion Photography It is Karen Lehrman's "argument in pictures" that fashion photography is in a steep decline. Her evidence is at The Decline of Fashion Photography, a slide show of contemporary fashion photography, sterile and boring, contrasted with original and beautiful examples of the genre in the past. She compares an image by Irving Penn, whose brilliant 1951 Vogue cover recently sold for $28,750 at auction, with a contemporary image taken by one of today's biggest celebrity photographers, that sold for $3,000. The latter somehow seems like a worse deal than the far higher price paid for the Penn, she argues. Visitors can decide for themselves if they agree with the critics charge that the decline is because today's fashion photographers see themselves as artists, while their Golden Age more artful predecessors were just working for a living. http://slate.msn.com/features/010510_fashion-slide-show/01.htm The Lockergnome Effect The name itself is intriguing enough for a visit to Lockergnome.com, created in 1996 as an e-zine that has since grown to a full-service tech portal offering nine newsletters and a host of other services, including e-books, an active community, a modeling site, a game escape and an exemplary RSS resource. RSS, short for Really Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary, is a news aggregator designed to aid the distribution of on-line content without the use of e-mail. News headlines and associated links are delivered directly to the user, who can view stories in a browser or click through to complete online articles. As an RSS "evangelist," site creator Chris Pirillo delivers a user-friendly option for consuming news and tracking technology. Free Channels offers the latest tips, tricks, links, reviews, and more. Get downloads, sites, and tips for working with Windows, Macs, and Linux. Play free online games and puzzles at the Arcade or free games like Fowl Words, pitting you against a barnyard of hens; or grab free downloads like personalized greeting e-cards. SHORT TAKES End It All When software urges you to close all running programs before running their setup, save time and tedium with EndItAll, a small freeware utility that makes closing all running applications quick and easy. This handy app is from Neil J. Rubenking, a contributing tech editor for PC Magazine. http://home.ptd.net/~don5408/toolbox/enditall/
We whistle to kill time, to admire pretty ladies, to signal relief, and in the dark to calm fears. At Whistling, the techniques, modes, tricks and secrets of whistling are explored so that whistling, like singing, might be appreciated on its own many merits. http://home.earthlink.net/~rdmiller3/i_whistling.html
You can fool some of the people some of the time, but these building conversions are Not Fooling Anybody. Dedicated to the documentation of design blights on our culture's landscape, NFA records painstaking efforts to renovate and disguise, like the former Taco Bell whose new owner struggled mightily to give it a Middle Eastern exotica, all with before and after photos. http://www.notfoolinganybody.com/ Enjoy

New Yorkish Feeling in a New York state of mind? Visit NewYorkish.com, a weblog of humor, news and other info from New York City, updated daily. Started in January 2003 as a weekly satire e-zine and re-launched as a weblog in 2003, New Yorkish has been described by USA Today as "being about nothing in much the way (and in the same place) that Seinfeld was like a transcript of a good session of subway-platform eavesdropping." West Coasters will appreciate "Drinkable Schwarzenegger," an article asking if the cheap attempts to exploit its new governor's name will ever end? And visitors from any coast or mid-state will enjoy the humor in such articles as "Tattoos Are, Like, Totally Boring," "Mad Cow Burger Special," and "Cowboys Get It On Too." For a good laugh and witty writing, go to New York via New Yorkish. Where's Cherie? While the rest of us are tethered to our computers, locked into cubicles or suffocating under To Do lists, where's Cherie? Cherie, an adventurous young woman with an Amelia Earhart complex, is following "the sudden urge to get on an airplane and just disappear." Follow her daredevil exploits at Where's Cherie.com, where the former used-car dealership manager unfolds her mission to visit 30 countries by age 30. Whether swimming with sharks, hang-gliding in Rio or riding a Harley in Pismo Beach, Cherie is having a blast. Visitors are invited to join her through photos and journals, to guess her next adventure and send comments on her exploits as she zeroes in on her goal. **********Advertisement**************

Quirky Alone Do relatives give you quizzical looks but you know in your heart of hearts that you're following your inner voice? Though you may not be romancing a single person, you are romancing the world. Celebrate your freedom on National Quirkyalone Day, February 14th, with help from Quirky Alone. S/he who is truly quirky alone recognizes, upon hearing those four syllables, her/himself. Those who aren't certain can take a personality test to help determine whether they are quirky, alone, quirky alone, or maybe even normal. Meet the other quirkyalones, like she who calls herself "deeply single" and wondered if she was weird until lonely romantics began appearing on TV shows like Ally McBeal and Sex in the City, shining a spotlight on the forever single. Learn the lingo in the Glossary, like who perkytogethers and quirkysluts are, and what the tyranny-of-coupledom is. If you already know, you may be quirky alone. Check it out and get quirky together.
