The Shoe Project

Lots of people are just mad about shoes. Women-type people in particular, but at The Shoe Project male or female fans of footwear, from ruby red slippers to goofy winter slippers, will find old friends or new crushes. These are not shoe ads but shoes spotted on the street, in a puddle or in a roommate's closet.

Photos of mud-caked sandals, strappy little pumps, sexy stilettos or clunky hiking boots are accompanied by musings and commentary. Visitors are invited to submit their own photos of fabulous shoes, join in the postings to be part of the soleful conversation, or download a fabulous black stiletto as wallpaper.

Paper Craft Yamahas

It may be safer but you don't get the wind through your hair or the bugs in your teeth when you create paper models of Yamaha's "big naked" XJR 1300, the low and long DSC11, or the sensational TMAX automatic sports model at Yamaha's Paper Craft site. Create paper models of Yamaha's most popular models, down to the frame structure, using detailed parts and assembly manuals in downloadable Adobe Acrobat PDF format.

If choppers aren't your style, link to "Rare Animals of Japan" or "Rare Animals of the World" to create models of many species of endangered animals. All models are created after extensive research by Paper Craft engineers who refer to sources like encyclopedias and owner's manuals. study the shape of the Atlas beetle or the DSC11, put it into a 3-dimensional form that a child could assemble, design the parts patterns and make prototypes.

Dream Anatomy

Human imagination is a remarkable thing, as is human anatomy. Put the two together and Dream Anatomy emerges, a collection of astonishing anatomical representations from the collections of the National Library of Medicine, from 1500 to the present.

The invention of the printing press in the 15th century and resulting print technologies helped inspire the science of anatomy, as detailed, inspired, whimsical even surreal anatomical imagery proliferated. In the late 1600s, anatomists began to collect and exhibit real bodies and body parts that had been preserved, colored, costumed, and arranged for display. See the results in sections like Getting Real, Beautiful Ugliness and the Gallery. At the Learning Station, find lesson plans and activities for educators and students grades 6-12.

The Bloggies

The Weblog Awards, or Bloggies, honor outstanding weblogs, those highly personal and highly idiosyncratic web pages with dated entries. The 2004 Bloggies are open to any weblogs that existed during the year 2003.

Bloggies are publicly-chosen awards, so from January 1 until January 12, voters nominated their favorite weblogs; three panels of voters received a list of weblogs with the most nominations in ten categories and voted for their favorites. Finalists were announced on January 19 and now voting is open until January 31 to choose the winners, which will be posted on March 15. Nominating categories included Best Merchandise, Best Webring, Best Directory, Best Article About, Best Web Application and Best Tagline. The 2003 tagline prize went to Electric Bugaloo for "Still cool, just like the other side of the pillow."

Marbles Reunited

A vigorous British-based campaign is underway to reunite sections of the Parthenon Sculptures housed in the British Museum known as the Elgin Marbles and restore them to their rightful place in Athens next to the Parthenon. Activists in the campaign for Marbles Reunited believe the sculptures makes sense only as a whole and should be displayed as a single complete work of art in the New Acropolis Museum being built in Athens, per the wishes of the Greek government.

The campaign urges Prime Minister Tony Blair, the British government and the British Museum to agree to return the Marbles on loan to Greece for display in the New Acropolis Museum in 2004, when the Olympic Games return to their original home site in Athens. See images of the marbles and visit the media center for key information and an image database.
