You can time travel and web surf at the same time using the Wayback Machine, created by the Internet Archive. The Archive has been collecting and storing web pages since 1996, providing users with what is essentially a historically cataloged resource guide to the rapid evolution of the Internet over the past decade. Visitors will get a kick out of searching through 'old' web sites and seeing the stark contrast in technology and design between today's Internet and the Internet of the 'nineties'. Much like a futuristic 'card catalog' from your local library, just search by URL to see the humble beginnings of such Net giants as Yahoo and Microsoft. http://www.archive.org/web/web.php Masters of Cinema Both a paradise for film mavens and a classroom for those of us who have been trapped in world of Hollywood for too long, this site is the ultimate resource for fans of World Cinema. Created by four friends on three different continents, this 'international initiative' aims to keep discerning film lovers up-to-date on their favorite art form. The coolest feature on the site is the Calendar, which lists future release dates of the re-mastered DVD's of some of the greatest directors of all time including Bresson, Dreyer, Cassavetes and Bruñuel. The editors of the site have recently teamed up with Eureka in the United Kingdom to create their very own 'Masters of Cinema' DVD series. http://www.mastersofcinema.org/ Behind the Name What is the one word you will always hear, day after day, for the rest of your life? The answer is your 'name', but just where does this title given to you by your parents come from, and what does it mean? The meaning behind your name can be found at this terrific site, which lists the etymology behind thousands of first names. You can easily search their diverse database of English, German, Spanish, Arabic, Mythological, and Biblical and African names. Additionally, there is a vast amount of information on other related topics, such as instructions on how to change your name, the correct pronunciation of your name in foreign languages, even a list of the Most Popular names in the world. SHORT TAKES Motorcycle Memories Motorcycle buffs will get a kick out of this great collection of photographs and postcards featuring vintage cycles from all around the world. The organization's slogan, "mapping the ancient world, from Athens to Zucchabar' captures the passion with which these historians continue to keep geographic history alive and a part of university curriculum. The site has just been updated with over twenty new maps of Ancient Rome, and has plenty of other exhibits such as the Barrington Atlas and information about Hadrian's Wall, as well a newsletter and links to related sites. History buffs should have their bookmarks ready. http://www.unc.edu/awmc/content/xhtml/index.html Anatomy of a Refugee Camp War or political turmoil in any given country produces a countless number of refugees, people who flee the area of crisis in search of safety and shelter. As many of us have read about but few have experienced firsthand, independent agencies and governments set up 'refugee camps' to provide temporary housing and security for these displaced victims of war. This creative and informative site exhibits these 'refugee camps' as they truly are, more like miniature cities than camps. Created by Canada's National Broadcasting Channel, the site is an interactive, virtual tour that takes you through the myriad elements of the average refugee camp. Using a compass to wander the animated camp, visitors can click on different areas such as the hospital, feeding centre, cemetery, school and food storage warehouse to learn about the harsh realities and social dynamics of these 'temporary' communities. http://www.cbc.ca/news/iraq/presentations/refugees/refugee.html PDN Photo Annual 2004 Every year the PDN Photo Annual honors the most powerful images captured by photographers, magazines, schools and advertising agencies. Awards are given out to the photographs that most effectively 'put a human face to the times that we live in'. Sponsored by industry giants Canon, Epson, Nikon, Fuji and Olympus, the site takes a breathtaking look at our world's current events through the lenses of some of the most adept photographers around. Vote for your favorite entry in categories ranging from Advertising to Photojournalism to Student Work. The stunning, beautiful and often painful images on this site are well worth the hours required to peruse them all. http://photoannual2004.musarium.com/index.html **********Advertisement**************
