The Living Room Candidate

With Election Day approaching, television viewers are seeing more and more harsh political ads everyday. Presidential campaign commercials have been around almost as long as televisions have, and the old ones are far more interesting to watch than the current smear adverts being run by Bush and Kerry.

The American Museum of the Moving Image presents "The Living Room Candidate", a retrospective of Presidential Election Ads from 1952-2004. Using Real Player, visitors can view these fascinating ads and read their original transcripts, both of which provide a timely bit of perspective on our nation's long presidential history of Democrat vs. Republican. Especially noteworthy on the site are the ads from the 1968
election between future president Nixon, Vice-President Hubert Humphrey and
notorious Alabama governor George Wallace.

Golden Age Cartoons

While the Internet Age has brought us an amazing new genre of cool comic animation, there will always be a place in our hearts for the legendary characters of cartoon yore. Revisit some of your closest childhood friends such as Felix the Cat, Sylvester and Tweety, Woody Woodpecker and many other characters from the Golden Age of Hollywood Cartoons.

The Golden Age Cartoon website was created as a tribute to the original hand-drawn characters, comic stories and covers of yesteryear. Check out the Golden Age Funnies section where you can see classic cartoon comics in their original format, including 1940's renderings of Porky Pig, Bugs Bunny and the rest of the Warner Bros. Gang. Derelict London

Come and see the many hidden and lesser-known sides of the great capital of the United Kingdom. Amateur photographer Paul Talling exposes London's dark underbelly with over 750 images captured over the course of a year he spent "wandering" the city.

His stark, urban images are grouped into specific categories such as "People", "Pubs", "Graffiti", "Pools", "Shops", etc. While you won't see Big Ben or Bond Street, you will see enough of London on this site to leave you feeling as if you've just been there. The site does an excellent job of finding the soul of the city most double-decker tourist buses can't find.

That was Spinal Tap

For years the film "Spinal Tap" has entertained and inspired its countless cult following. Now, thanks to one dedicated "Taphead", there is a website where the many fans fueled by "Tapmania" can come together.

There are some truly unique features on SpinalTapFan.com, the most obvious of which is the 40,000 word-strong "Enormous A-Zed Guide". In addition to the tome, there are also archives of past articles, a section dedicated to the band's "discography", and even an online shop where you can support the site by purchasing Spinal Tap paraphernalia. This is the ultimate fan site for the ultimate cult film!

Voices of Civil Rights

While the Civil Rights Movement had extraordinary leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks, like most moments in history it was made possible not by an individual person, but by the thousands of people whose endless efforts and unheard actions will be felt across generations to come. "Voices of Civil Rights" gives an opportunity for the many anonymous activists of that remarkable era of strife and change to share their stories and memories.

Brought to us by both the Library of Congress and the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights, this website was built as a living memorial to those who walked, shouted, struggled and fought tirelessly for equality during the Civil Rights Movement. Go to the "The Voices" to read the moving stories of ordinary people who experienced and participated in this important period in modern history.

OOo-(_)-oOOo--------

"We have so much to be grateful for. What a precious privilege it is.

Rather than being aware of that, the mind, out of habit, is usually
searching for what is wrong and for how to correct what is wrong.

Obviously one aspect of the survival of the organism is seeing what is
wrong and fixing what is wrong - so that one can be fed, clothed, and
housed.

I am not saying this is wrong except that at this point, where you are,
there is much more to be grateful for than is usually acknowledged. And
even if it is acknowledged it is brushed aside with "I am not really
that lucky" because you don't want to tempt the gods to send down some
bad luck, or you have guilt about being so lucky without deserving it.

This precious lifetime, which could end in an instant and will
certainly end sooner than one is ready, is here with these
circumstances, just as they are.

What divine good luck.

In this moment there is more to be grateful for than there is to fix.
And if you ignore this truth, or trivialize this truth, or feel guilty
about this truth, then the clarity of mind that allows real
investigation is missing
."
